Randy McDaniel, author of A Blacksmithing Primer – A Course in Basic and Intermediate Blacksmithing and Hydraulic Forging Press for the Blacksmith will present an intermediate-level Toolmaking/Heat Treating class at the Banton-Smith Center on November 20, 2021. Randy will lead the students in making a slit chisel from coil spring material, determining the proper heat treatment medium, and hardening/tempering the chisel. Students will leave the class with a useful tool and valuable knowledge to expand their blacksmithing skillset and tool rack. Randy is Owner-Operator of ExPRESSive Metals blacksmithing school in Berkley Springs, West Virginia.
– Working with hot metal requires some precautions – substantial, closed-toed shoes are required. Cotton, wool, or other non-synthetic clothing is recommended – things like nylon or fleece can melt and stick to skin. Eye and Ear protection are required – we can provide it for $5.00 or you can bring your own.
– Minimum age 18 (no exceptions please).
– If you are buying a ticket for someone else, please let us know who will attend the class and provide contact information so we can contact attendees in case of last-minute information, changes, or cancellation.
– Bring your own lunch. We will take a mid-class break. We will have water.
– Masks are required for the unvaccinated, recommended for the fully vaccinated.
